Ian Ogilvie
Having worked in various management and training roles within the leisure industry, Ian now runs his own Health and Safety consultancy business offering a solutions based approach for the swimming pools and open water. Delivering certified and bespoke training, compliance audits, health and safety consultancy also producing in swimming pool podcasts and YouTube channels all with a view to helping the industry in his spare time to help move standards forward.
How it started:
Ian’s journey in the leisure industry started in the early 90’s studying at NC in Leisure and Recreation at Dumfries and Galloway College for a year before moving to James Watt College to study a HND in Leisure Management. After studying and landing his first job in leisure in the hospitality industry working for Swallow Hotels as a Leisure Attendant it didn’t take long before being promoted to the Assistant Manager and the Leisure Club Manager. Then wanting to concentrate on more mainstream leisure Ian moved south of the border to work at a 50 metre swimming pool outside of London.
Through his journey on his career path he worked for several other leisure trusts and private sector leisure providers. This gave Ian experience at working at water parks and the private sale sector of leisure. With his final two employed posts being a Contract Manager of a National Olympic Centre and then finally working as a Training Manager for a large leisure provider up until 2009. In this role Ian started on his journey of being involved more in the teaching pool plant and the chemistry of water.
Going it alone:
During the financially crash of 2009 unfortunately Ian was made redundant from his role as a Training Manager and then decided to go back to studying. Over the next year Ian started out on his journey of becoming a registered Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner. At the same time becoming self employed in the industry working as a consultant once registered. The services that the business includes.

Ian’s exposure has become even more prolific over the past few years, firstly by hosting a series of webinars for the RLSS with invited guests on each show. He is also an author of several operations and training manuals for the RLSS and the Institute of Swimming. As one of the founders of the group Swimming Pool Network to try and support the industry during the pandemic making it easier for the sector to network. Ian was one of the key people involved in the research conducted via Imperial College London and Waterbabies into the transmission of Covid 19 through swimming pool water. Finally Ian has recently been voted on to the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group Council as representative for the Institute of Swimming and is currently the Vice Chair. He also sits on the British Standards Institute as a Committee Member for Swimming Pools.
